Misaki Kawai (b. 1978, Japan) lives and works between America, Europe and Japan. Her various visual explorations – spanning from handmade artist zines, prints, paintings, fluffy toys, ceramics, fashion, furniture and total installations – is never limited to one specific medium, nor is it syntactic or hierarchic; she combines and is constantly working on several projects and pieces at once.
For more than two decades, Kawai has exhibited widely, including solo exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston (USA); Malmö Kunsthall (Sweden); the Children’s Museum of Arts, New York (USA); the Watari Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo (Japan); and has been featured in shows at MoMA PS1, Peter Freeman Inc, and Deitch Projects in New York. Most recently, was her solo exhibition, Moko Moko Doki Doki, at The Hole in New York; and her large-scale installation Moja Moja Life was on display at the National Gallery of Victoria Triennial in Australia in 2021.
Kawai is currently back in residence at the old naval museum in Copenhagen, where she prepared her 2017 solo exhibition, Romantic Melody, at V1 Gallery.
